Mandla Ncikazi Breaks Silence After Orlando Pirates Exit — “I’m Still Grateful To My Previous Employers”

Mandla Ncikazi has spoken publicly for the first time since leaving Orlando Pirates, expressing gratitude to the Soweto giants as he begins a new chapter as head coach of Lamontville Golden Arrows.

The experienced South African tactician has returned to familiar surroundings after spending more than five years with Pirates, where he was part of a successful technical team that collected nine trophies. His departure marks a significant career move, giving him another opportunity to lead a Premiership side from the dugout.

Ncikazi’s comments have also highlighted the importance of maintaining professional relationships in football, even when a coach decides to move on to a new challenge.

Speaking to Golden Arrows’ media team, Ncikazi acknowledged the role his former employers played in his development and thanked the club’s leadership for allowing him to pursue his ambition of becoming a head coach again.

“It’s predestination; sometimes it helps. I wouldn’t have had an opportunity if I’m not the person that I am,” Ncikazi said.

“Hence, I’m still grateful to my previous employers [Orlando Pirates] for the opportunity and growth and words of wisdom.”

His message is a respectful farewell to a club where he experienced considerable success and gained valuable experience working alongside different coaches and technical structures.

Pirates confirmed on 22 October 2026 that Ncikazi would be leaving after requesting permission to pursue a head-coaching opportunity.

Club chairman Dr Irvin Khoza thanked him for his contribution and said the club respected his ambition to take on a new responsibility.

Ncikazi had served predominantly as an assistant coach, including a period as co-coach during the 2021/22 campaign. His time at Mayfair coincided with a successful era for the Buccaneers, who won nine trophies during his involvement with the technical team.

There had been speculation about possible tensions between Ncikazi and head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. However, Ouaddou publicly dismissed reports of a rift, explaining that Ncikazi had undergone surgery and was recovering.

The official explanation from Pirates was that Ncikazi wanted to return to a head-coaching position. His move to Golden Arrows gives him that opportunity.

Ncikazi is no stranger to Abafana Bes’thende. During his previous spell as head coach in the 2020/21 season, he guided the KwaZulu-Natal club to a fourth-place finish in the league, the highest position in the club’s history in the Premiership era.

He has now returned to a team looking to improve its results after parting ways with Pitso Dladla. The club’s decision to appoint Ncikazi reflects its confidence in his experience and understanding of its football culture.

The coach also expressed gratitude to Golden Arrows chairlady Mato Madlala for considering him for the position.
