Why Your Prepaid Credits Are Running Out Fast: ECG Offers Explanation as Transformer Works Continue
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has said improvements in the country’s power supply are expected as soon as its ongoing transformer replacement and substation rehabilitation projects are completed.
According to ECG’s Director of Communications, Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, the upgrades form part of a broader effort to reduce the power interruptions and fluctuations affecting communities across Ghana. He explained that the completion of the work is expected to provide households and businesses with a more stable electricity supply.
Dr. Ayiku also sought to clarify concerns over prepaid meters, particularly complaints from customers who believe their electricity credits are being exhausted unusually quickly. He said the faster consumption of prepaid units is not necessarily a sign that a meter is malfunctioning.
Instead, he explained that faults within a building’s electrical system could sometimes be responsible. Poor wiring, inadequate earthing and outdated electrical installations can result in energy losses, especially in older properties. These faults may cause electricity to be used without providing the expected benefit, leading to quicker depletion of prepaid credits.
The ECG official therefore encouraged consumers experiencing unusual electricity consumption to have their internal wiring inspected by qualified professionals. He stressed that maintaining the electrical system within a property is also an important responsibility of consumers.
The issue has become particularly significant as households face increasing financial pressure and seek ways to reduce unnecessary energy consumption and expenses.
ECG has advised customers to make use of its official reporting channels whenever they encounter electricity-related problems. At the same time, the company is urging property owners to maintain their internal electrical installations, noting that improvements to the national power network will need to be complemented by properly maintained household systems to achieve lasting reliability and energy efficiency.
