WHO: Nigeria Records No Current Ebola Case After Patient Flown Out Of Nigeria to Switzerland
According to a report by Leadership Nigeria on Monday, October 26, 2026, the World Health Organisation has said that Nigeria currently has no Ebola case after the country’s first reported patient and her husband were evacuated to Switzerland.
The patient, who showed significant clinical improvement, was flown out of Abuja at 6 a.m. aboard a medical evacuation aircraft.
Strict medical protocols were reportedly followed during the evacuation to prevent further transmission of the disease.
Mohamed Janabi, WHO Regional Director for Africa, said the patient was clinically stable after Nigerian medical personnel managed her through the acute phase of the illness.
The patient and her husband are both Swiss citizens. They were evacuated to Switzerland for continued medical care and monitoring.
The development means Nigeria currently has no active Ebola case, according to the WHO.
Health authorities are expected to continue surveillance and other precautionary measures following the evacuation.
Ebola is a severe disease that can spread through contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person.
Its symptoms may include fever, weakness, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in serious cases, internal or external bleeding.
The WHO has continued to work with Nigerian health authorities to support case management, infection prevention and control, contact tracing and public health surveillance.
The successful evacuation followed the patient’s reported improvement under the care of Nigerian medical professionals.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the patient’s identity or the circumstances surrounding her infection.
Health officials are expected to maintain vigilance while monitoring possible contacts and strengthening preparedness measures at health facilities and points of entry.
