Kaduna Community’s Only Health Centre Abandoned Despite Billions In Allocations, Residents Travel Long Distances For Basic Medical Care –Report
The report also revealed that the facility lacks essential medicines, functional medical equipment, and adequate qualified healthcare workers, leaving vulnerable residents without basic medical attention.
Residents of Sabon Gida in Fadan Karshi Ward, Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State, have been left without access to reliable primary healthcare as the community’s only Primary Health Care Centre (PHC) lies in ruins, leaving patients stranded and frustrated, despite over ₦200 billion federal allocation to the state.
The deplorable condition of the healthcare facility was revealed in a report released on Monday, by a civic technology organisation, MonITNG, which called on the Kaduna State Government and Sanga Local Government Council to urgently intervene.
According to the report, the Primary Healthcare Centre is the only primary healthcare facility serving residents of Sabon Gida, but its infrastructure has deteriorated so badly that it appears abandoned.
The report revealed that the ceilings of the facility are collapsing, while the walls are cracked and peeling.
The report also revealed that the facility lacks essential medicines, functional medical equipment, and adequate qualified healthcare workers, leaving vulnerable residents without basic medical attention.
“Pregnant women, children suffering from malaria and fever, and elderly people with chronic illnesses are left without proper care,” the report stated.
The report added that many residents are forced to travel long distances to access healthcare or resort to purchasing medicines from unlicensed drug vendors, potentially exposing them to further health risks.
The situation has raised concerns over the management and utilisation of public funds earmarked for healthcare in Kaduna State.
According to figures confirmed by Statisense, a data company specialised in public financial report analysis, bank statement evaluation, and AI chatbot services, Kaduna State received ₦203.60 billion in gross Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations between January and September 2026, while the state’s local governments also received yet-to-be-confirmed substantial allocations.
Despite the significant public funds available to the state and local authorities, MonITNG’s report revealed that residents of Sabon Gida continue to endure a health facility that lacks basic infrastructure and essential services.
MonITNG pointed to the Nigerian Government’s disbursement of billions of naira through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), which was established to strengthen primary healthcare delivery across Nigeria.
MonITNG questioned why the Sabon Gida facility remains in such a deplorable condition despite the various streams of government funding intended to improve access to basic healthcare.
The situation, it said, raises serious questions about accountability, funding priorities and the implementation of government healthcare programmes at the grassroots.
MonITNG called on the Kaduna State Ministry of Health and the Sanga Local Government Council to immediately renovate the facility, supply essential medicines and functional medical equipment, and deploy qualified healthcare personnel.
The organisation also urged the authorities to ensure that the facility is properly maintained and capable of providing safe and reliable healthcare services to residents.
“The people of Sabon Gida deserve access to safe, affordable, and reliable healthcare. No community should be abandoned when it comes to basic medical services,” MonITNG said.
“Authorities must act now to protect lives and restore this facility to a functional condition. Healthcare is a right, not a privilege.”
The condition of the facility comes amid renewed concerns over the gap between government revenue allocations and the quality of basic public services available to Nigerians, particularly in rural communities.
SaharaReporters’ efforts to get the comments of the Kaduna State government on the state of the healthcare facility and the concerns raised in the report failed. Calls made to the Kaduna State Commissioner for Information, Ahmed Maiyaki, failed while message sent to him has not been responded to till the time of filing this report.
