VIDEO: Meet the Pastor Who Escaped Death as 24 Church Members Died in Mombasa Road Crash

A photo has emerged of Reverend Spencer Mdave, a pastor who survived a horrific road accident that claimed the lives of 24 church members along the Nairobi Mombasa Highway.

The crash occurred at around 7:45am near Kanga, close to Mtito Andei, when a lorry rammed into a bus carrying members of Power of the Word International Church. The worshippers were returning to Mombasa after attending a pastor’s burial in western Kenya.

Although Mdave survived the accident, he suffered a heartbreaking loss after four of his relatives died in the collision.

The pastor recounted the terrifying moments before the crash, explaining that he heard a loud bang before the bus appeared to lift and overturn.

He later realised that a lorry had struck the bus from behind, causing the devastating accident.

Mdave said passengers seated at the back of the bus suffered the most serious injuries, while those sitting towards the front escaped with minor bruises. Some survivors had already returned home after receiving treatment.

The tragedy left several families mourning their loved ones. In Mombasa, members of the church gathered to pray and remember the worshippers who died while travelling home.Medical officials confirmed that 24 people had died in the accident, while several others sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital.

Makueni County Chief Officer for Medical Services Alex Makau said some of the injured passengers were transferred to other facilities for further treatment.

Eleven were taken to Makindu Hospital, while two others were referred to Coast General Hospital.

The accident has renewed concerns about road safety in Kenya, where fatal crashes continue to claim numerous lives every year.

The National Transport and Safety Authority has called for road accidents to be declared a national disaster because of the high number of deaths recorded annually.

The government has also announced plans to strengthen traffic law enforcement, improve road safety infrastructure and enhance the training of public service vehicle drivers.

For Mdave and the affected congregation, the journey home ended in tragedy, leaving families grieving and survivors struggling to cope with the painful loss.
