Tinubu Pledged To Intensify Efforts To Address Migration Of Nigerian Medical Professionals Abroad

According To Punch Newspaper, On Monday 26th October, 2026, President Bola Tinubu has pledged to intensify efforts to address the migration of Nigerian medical professionals abroad, popularly known as japa, saying the Federal Government will work towards encouraging them to return home and contribute to the country healthcare system. Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration commitment to strengthening disease surveillance and regional cooperation to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, including Ebola, amid the ongoing outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain in parts of Africa.

The President made the commitments on Monday in Abuja through the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, at the opening and induction ceremony of the 50th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the West African College of Physicians. The event marked the golden jubilee of the college, bringing together medical professionals and other stakeholders to discuss developments, challenges and opportunities in the healthcare sector across West Africa.

Tinubu remarks highlighted the importance of retaining skilled medical personnel and creating an environment that would encourage Nigerian doctors and other healthcare workers practising abroad to return to the country. The migration of medical professionals has remained a major concern for Nigeria healthcare system, with many doctors leaving for countries offering better remuneration, improved working conditions and opportunities for professional development.

The Federal Government renewed commitment is expected to draw attention to the need for policies that address the factors contributing to the departure of healthcare workers, including inadequate infrastructure, limited career opportunities and the pressure on existing medical facilities. Beyond the issue of migration, the President stressed the importance of strengthening public health systems to improve Nigeria preparedness for disease outbreaks.

His remarks come amid concerns over the spread of infectious diseases across parts of Africa, particularly the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has underscored the need for effective surveillance, early detection and coordinated responses among neighbouring countries. Tinubu position also emphasised the importance of regional collaboration in identifying potential health threats and preventing them from spreading across borders.

The golden jubilee conference provides an opportunity for physicians and health experts to examine the challenges confronting healthcare delivery in West Africa and explore strategies for improving medical practice. The President commitments underscore the administration stated intention to improve healthcare delivery, retain skilled professionals and strengthen disease prevention and control across the country.
