Tears of Joy Hit Mahama As Ashanti Region Goes Green Ahead of 2028 Elections Over Massive Projects
One of the most significant developments is the government’s infrastructure programme in the Ashanti Region, which includes road construction, healthcare facilities, housing and market projects. These initiatives are intended to improve transport, create economic opportunities and expand access to essential services.
Among the major projects is the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway, a six-lane highway designed to improve connectivity between Ghana’s two largest economic centres. The government has also reported progress on the Suame Interchange Phase II and other road projects in and around Kumasi.
Healthcare is another area receiving attention. Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene announced in October 2026 that 96 health facilities were under construction across the region. The projects include a Breast Care Centre at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and other facilities intended to bring healthcare closer to communities.
The region is also benefiting from the construction of 24-Hour Economy Model Markets. According to the Information Services Department, work was progressing at Tebeso No. 2 and Aboabo, with the broader initiative expected to deliver 42 model markets across Ashanti. The facilities are intended to improve trading conditions and support local economic activity.
These developments have provided material for political debate as the parties look towards the 2028 elections. Supporters of Mahama may point to the projects as evidence of the government’s development agenda, while critics are likely to focus on delivery timelines, funding and whether communities experience tangible improvements.
However, claims that the entire Ashanti Region has politically shifted in favour of the NDC cannot be established from the existence of infrastructure projects alone. The region’s electoral preferences will ultimately be determined by voters, and the impact of these initiatives will depend partly on their completion and practical benefits.
As the 2028 election approaches, the progress of these projects and their effect on jobs, transport, healthcare and local businesses are likely to remain important subjects in Ghana’s political debate.
