Survivor of Accident That Killed 24 People Breaks Silence on What Happened Moments Before the Crash
Twenty-four worshippers have died after the bus carrying them collided head-on with a truck on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway at Kanga, near Mtito-Andei within Tsavo National Park.
The bus was ferrying 45 members of The Christian Renewal Centre in Likoni, Mombasa, back home after they attended the burial of their colleague, the late Reverend Kiganane, in Makusi, Kakamega County.
Makueni Chief Officer for Health Dr Mulei Mbithi said 17 people died at the scene, while five others succumbed to their injuries at Mtito-Andei Sub-County Hospital. He added that 16 patients remain hospitalised.
Makueni County Commissioner Abdulahi Khalif confirmed that the bus body split almost in half, owing to the speed at which both vehicles were travelling when they collided.
Pastor Cosmas Nyangweso, one of the survivors, spoke to journalists from his hospital bed with broken upper limbs. He said the group left a stopover in Mtito-Andei at around 7am, and that the driver had appeared sleepy for much of the journey from Lugari.
According to Nyangweso, the driver tried to overtake several vehicles at Kanga, and the bus swayed to the right and slammed into the truck, whose driver was also attempting to avoid the crash.
He said the force of the impact flung passengers out of both vehicles, leaving bodies and injured survivors scattered along the roadside.
“We were thrown outside the bus. Where I was lying there were bodies and other people crying for help,” he said.
Nyangweso added that help arrived hours after the accident, leaving the injured to wait at the scene.
