Sakaja Threatens To Do This to Babu Owino If He Doesn’t Delete Post He Made Over Eastleigh Building

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has threatened to take Embakasi East MP Babu Owino to court over social media posts that linked him to the approval of the building that collapsed in Eastleigh.

Owino published the posts on X and Facebook at about 1:27 pm on Sunday, October 25, accusing the governor of misleading Kenyans by claiming the structure had no approval.

He argued that county records showed otherwise, and further alleged that KSh 120 million exchanged hands as a bribe to secure the permit. The claims have not been proven.

In a demand letter seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Sakaja’s lawyers said the posts carried an error and had already damaged his professional reputation, public image and personal morale.

They said the document wrongly attributed the approval for the Eastleigh plot, LR/Parcel No. 36/11/40, to him in his capacity as a registered physical planner. The lawyers gave the MP six hours to take the posts down, warning of legal proceedings and costs if he failed.

Sakaja also released documents to back his position that the county never approved the start of construction. They include police reports dated July 16 detailing alleged breaches of county laws at the site and naming individuals linked to the project.

Another letter, written two months earlier, shows he asked the Director of Public Prosecutions to gazette special prosecutors and approve six nominated officers to boost enforcement, citing stalled prosecutions since 2024.

The building came down on October 23 along Yusuf Haji Avenue (9th Street), with structural failure cited as the cause. The Kenya Red Cross is leading a multi-agency rescue operation.

The National Police Service confirmed that four people have been rescued and are receiving treatment in hospital. PS for MSMEs Development Susan Man’geni said 47 people were reported missing, of whom nine have been traced and reunited with their families, leaving 38 unaccounted for.

Families looking for relatives are urged to report to the Red Cross desk at the scene or call 1199.
