Sad Morning as Former MP Dies Suddenly While Receiving Treatment in Nairobi Hospital

Former Alego Usonga Member of Parliament Otieno Mak’Onyango has died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi.

Current area MP Sam Atandi announced the death on Sunday evening, October 25, in a statement expressing his grief. He said the former legislator had passed on while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital. “May his soul rest in peace,” he said.

Mak’Onyango first built a career in journalism, working at the East African Standard, the publication now known as The Standard newspaper. That path put him in the middle of one of the most turbulent chapters in Kenya’s history. He was among the Kenyans arrested after the failed coup attempt of August 1982, when air force personnel tried to overthrow President Daniel arap Moi’s government.

He later turned to politics and made history in the 1992 General Election, when he unseated Peter Oloo Aringo, who had held the Alego Usonga seat in Siaya County since 1974. The win ended Aringo’s 18-year stay in Parliament.

Aringo bounced back in the 1997 elections and represented the constituency until 2002.

Mak’Onyango’s death marks the loss of a figure who navigated both the media and political landscapes during some of the most difficult decades in Kenya’s recent past.

Details of the burial arrangements and the cause of his death had not been made public at the time of publication.
