A Nairobi tailor, Victor Onyango, has recounted his terrifying experience after surviving for approximately 30 hours under the rubble of a collapsed building in Eastleigh, Nairobi, only to lose his entire business in the tragedy.

Onyango, who operated a tailoring shop in the building’s basement along 9th Street, was sewing garments on Friday, October 23, when the structure suddenly collapsed.

According to his account, the roof gave way, throwing him into a corner as concrete and debris buried the surrounding area. Trapped beneath the wreckage, he struggled to find an escape route while parts of the building continued falling.

During the ordeal, Onyango discovered that a woman was also trapped nearby. Despite the dangerous conditions, he continued searching for a way out before eventually directing rescuers to the woman’s location.

After spending nearly 30 hours beneath the debris, the tailor was rescued alive and rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment. He was later discharged to recover at home.

However, his survival came at a devastating financial cost. His sewing machines, fabrics and other business equipment remained buried beneath the rubble, leaving him without the tools needed to earn a living.

The building collapsed while construction work was ongoing near Yusuf Haji Avenue. According to reports, approximately 67 workers were at the site when the incident occurred.

The tragedy has left affected traders facing uncertainty as rescue operations and investigations continue.
