“Gachagua Hosts Kalonzo at Wamunyoro The Hidden Political Message Behind Their Meeting”
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hosted Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County as opposition leaders continue discussions on cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The meeting took place on Monday, October 26, 2026, bringing together two prominent opposition figures at a time when political parties are exploring ways to challenge President William Ruto in the next election.
Gachagua welcomed Kalonzo to his home and described him as his cousin, stressing the importance of working together. In a message shared publicly, he said unity of purpose was important, signalling his desire for continued cooperation among opposition leaders.
Kalonzo had announced his intention to visit Gachagua a day earlier. He explained that the two had remained friends and that the visit was a normal engagement between leaders who had maintained a relationship over time.
However, the meeting comes amid growing political discussions about whether opposition parties can agree on a common presidential candidate for the 2027 polls.
Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has recently held talks with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement. That meeting, held at Wamunyoro on October 20, sparked further debate about possible political partnerships.
DCP leaders have publicly expressed support for Sifuna’s presidential ambitions and have indicated that they want other opposition figures to consider backing him. Wiper, however, has pushed back against claims that Kalonzo’s visit was intended to persuade him to support Sifuna.
The differences highlight the challenge facing opposition leaders as they attempt to build a united political front. While they share an interest in cooperating ahead of the election, questions remain over who should lead any coalition and how participating parties would work together.
Kalonzo remains a key figure in opposition politics through Wiper and the Ukombozi Alliance, while Gachagua has continued to build relationships with leaders from different regions since leaving the office of Deputy President in 2024.
The outcome of their discussions was not immediately made public. It is therefore unclear whether the meeting produced any agreement on a joint presidential candidate or a formal coalition arrangement.
