MTN Ghana to Invest $1.1 Billion in Network Expansion as Company Marks 30 Years
MTN Ghana has announced plans to invest $1.1 billion over the next three years to improve network coverage, enhance service quality and strengthen its telecommunications infrastructure as the company celebrates 30 years of operations in Ghana.
The General Manager of MTN Ghana, Mr David Gyimah Boadi, disclosed this at a media and stakeholder forum in the Eastern Region, where he outlined the company’s achievements, investment plans and commitment to digital inclusion and national development.
He said approximately $308 million of the planned investment would be deployed in 2026 to improve network capacity, strengthen infrastructure resilience and extend connectivity to more communities across the country.
Mr Gyimah Boadi noted that MTN Ghana had evolved significantly over the past three decades, moving from a telecommunications provider to a digital services platform connecting individuals, businesses and communities to opportunities.
According to him, although the company had faced challenges in extending network coverage and meeting customer expectations, it remained committed to improving service delivery.
He expressed appreciation to customers for their patience and continued support, adding that the company would continue investing in a stronger and more resilient network.
MTN strengthens cybersecurity and customer protection
Mr Gyimah Boadi emphasised that providing connectivity must go hand in hand with protecting customers’ personal information and financial transactions.
He said MTN was strengthening data privacy practices, investing in cybersecurity and promoting ethical business operations to maintain customer trust.
With October observed as Cybersecurity Awareness Month, he urged customers to take responsibility for their online safety by protecting their passwords and personal information.
He also highlighted the company’s Ethics Week activities, which seek to promote integrity, accountability, fraud prevention and ethical conduct among employees.
Mobile money transactions record 44.4% growth
Touching on mobile money performance, Mr Gyimah Boadi revealed that MTN’s mobile money transactions grew by 44.4 per cent year-on-year in the first half of 2026.
He said active users increased by 3.1 per cent, while transaction volumes and mobile money revenue each recorded growth of 23.3 per cent.
He noted that mobile money had become an important tool for financial inclusion, enabling individuals and businesses to make payments and participate more actively in the digital economy.
He assured customers that MTN would continue working to protect transactions and educate users on how to identify and avoid fraudulent activities.
MTN invests in youth development and digital skills
The General Manager said youth empowerment remained central to the company’s social investment agenda, particularly through education, digital skills training and innovation.
He highlighted partnerships with the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology aimed at promoting digital innovation and developing young people’s technical skills.
He also mentioned initiatives such as hackathons and the MTN Ghana Apps Challenge, which provide students and aspiring developers with opportunities to showcase their ideas, acquire practical experience and benefit from mentorship.
Mr Gyimah Boadi further disclosed that the MTN Ghana Foundation awarded 500 scholarships to tertiary students this year.
The scholarship package includes tuition support, accommodation, stipends and laptops to help beneficiaries pursue their education.
He added that the MTN Skills Academy was equipping more than 100,000 young people with digital literacy, financial skills and career-readiness training.
MTN increases Heroes of Change prize to GH¢400,000
As part of its community development initiatives, MTN has increased the overall prize for its Heroes of Change programme from GH¢100,000 to GH¢400,000.
The programme recognises individuals making significant contributions to their communities. New award categories focusing on sustainability and digital innovation have also been introduced.
Mr Gyimah Boadi said the initiative reflected the company’s commitment to celebrating individuals whose work creates positive change in society.
He said MTN Ghana’s contribution to the country extended beyond telecommunications services to include job creation, tax payments, infrastructure investment and support for businesses and communities.
He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustainable development, responsible business practices and initiatives that create opportunities for Ghanaians.
As MTN Ghana marks its 30th anniversary, the company says it will continue to focus on network expansion, digital innovation, customer security and community development as it works to connect more people to opportunities.
The media and stakeholder forum in the Eastern Region formed part of the company’s engagement with stakeholders during its anniversary celebrations.
