“Motsepe Wanted Him To play For The U19s & Offered Him R15,000″ Relebohile Mofokeng Father Revealed
Relebohile Mofokeng, one of South African football’s highly regarded young talents, reportedly turned down an offer from Mamelodi Sundowns before deciding to join Orlando Pirates, according to his father, Sechaba Mofokeng.
Sechaba has revealed details of the offer his son allegedly received from Sundowns, explaining that the club wanted the young footballer to begin his development with its Under-19 team before potentially progressing to the reserve side.
According to his father, Sundowns, under the leadership of club president Patrice Motsepe, offered Relebohile a monthly salary of R15,000. The proposal reportedly included the possibility of promotion to the club’s reserve team, which competes in the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC), if he performed well at the Under-19 level.
“Motsepe wanted him to play for the U19s and offered him R15,000 – and if he did well, they would promote him to the reserve team in the DDC,” Sechaba said.
Despite the reported financial offer, Relebohile ultimately chose Orlando Pirates, a decision that highlights the different considerations young footballers and their families may weigh when selecting a club at the beginning of their professional careers.
For emerging players, the decision to join a football club often involves more than the immediate financial benefits. Opportunities for first-team exposure, a clear development pathway, coaching arrangements and the possibility of competing at the highest level can all influence a player’s choice.
In Relebohile’s case, the reported proposal from Sundowns would have required him to start with the Under-19 team, with progression to the reserve side dependent on his performances. His eventual move to Pirates placed him on a different developmental path.
The revelation is likely to generate discussion among South African football supporters, particularly fans of the two clubs, who have developed one of the country’s most prominent rivalries in recent years.
Mamelodi Sundowns have established themselves as a major force in domestic football, while Orlando Pirates continue to attract young players seeking opportunities to develop their careers within the club’s football structure.
Relebohile’s story also highlights the role parents can play in helping young footballers navigate important career decisions. At an early stage, choosing between competing offers can shape a player’s development, opportunities and future prospects.
Although the reported R15,000 offer provides an indication of the financial terms presented to the youngster, Sechaba’s account does not, by itself, establish all the factors that influenced his son’s final decision.
Nevertheless, the revelation offers an insight into the options reportedly available to Relebohile before he committed to Orlando Pirates.
His father’s comments have added another dimension to the player’s journey, raising questions about how young talents assess competing opportunities and why a footballer might choose one club over another, even when a different offer appears financially attractive.
