Malema Vows to Keep Fighting Until Zuma Is Back Behind Bars
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has said he believes former president Jacob Zuma will end up in prison, and that he will keep fighting him over what he calls damage to the “generational mission.”
“And we can tell you now, Zuma will go to jail. We want to see him suffer until the end for what he did to the generational mission,” Malema said.
He also claimed that Zuma had been warned not to take on his opponents. According to Malema, those opposing Zuma believe they have the strength and determination to keep up the fight. “We told him that he’s fighting with the wrong people, firstly we have a [unclear in the supplied quotation] on our side and he doesn’t,” he said.
Malema also mentioned Kgoshi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria, one of the best-known correctional facilities in the country. He said Zuma would eventually be taken there. “We are going to fetch him from the village to Kgoshi Mampuru prison in Pretoria, and we don’t say things we don’t do,” he said. He ended by repeating his position: “We told him we gonna fight him until he rots in jail.”
The remarks show how tense the relationship between the two leaders remains. Both have held major influence in South African politics, and their differences are closely followed by supporters of their parties. Zuma served as president from 2009 to 2018 and is now the leader of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party. Malema leads the EFF, which campaigns for economic transformation, land redistribution and a bigger role for the state in key parts of the economy.
Malema’s words are a political statement and do not mean any legal outcome has been decided. Any prison sentence would depend on court proceedings and the decisions of a competent court. His comments about Kgoshi Mampuru also do not show that Zuma’s imprisonment has been ordered or is about to happen.
It remains to be seen whether Zuma or the MK Party will respond, and whether the exchange leads to more public clashes between the two camps. How much weight the remarks carry will depend on the context in which they were made and on any developments in the legal matters involving the former president.
