Peter Gathogo and Nyambura Muigai won the men’s and ladies’ overall titles as the 2026 NCBA Golf Series qualifier attracted more than 200 golfers to Nakuru Golf Club on Saturday.

The exciting event also served as the Pro-Am for the Sunshine Development Tour’s Rift Valley Championship, which got under way at the club on Sunday and runs until Tuesday.

Gathogo, playing off handicap 6, carded 77 to take the men’s title, while Mackton Wekhomba was runner-up on 82, with Nanu Hassanali emerging third on 83.

In the ladies’ category, Muigai, who was playing off handicap 19, won with 88, while Susan Gichuki finished second position on 92, playing off handicap 17.

Mikael Kihara won the junior title with 77, while Simon Kuria (39 points) and Esther Thuku (35 points) clinched the men’s and ladies’ Division Two net titles, as Lawrence Terer won Division Three with 42 points.

In the team event, professional golfer Simon Njogu, Joseph Githiaka and Tobias Messo won on 118 points, ahead of Pro Nelson Mudanyi, Pancras Kuria and Dr Ian Bett on 111.

Njogu also topped the professional category, ahead of Mudanyi and Celestin Nsanzuwera.

NCBA Nakuru Branch Manager Denis Isanda said the turnout showed golf’s growing appeal in the region and across the country lauding NCBA’s key role in developing the sport.

“Events like this give golfers an opportunity to test themselves, build relationships and enjoy the game,” said Isanda.

The Rift Valley Championship is the Sunshine Development Tour’s inaugural event held at Nakuru Golf Club.

The tournament brings together professionals and elite amateurs from Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda and Uganda.

“We are excited to bring the Sunshine Development Tour to Nakuru Golf Club for the first time,” said Tour CEO David Ndungu.

He added: “We look forward to three days of competitive golf featuring professionals and elite amateurs from across the region.”
