Gachagua Reveals Opposition’s ‘Sixth Administration’ Plan After Kalonzo Meeting
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka have stepped up consultations on the future of Kenya’s opposition, with their latest meeting at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence placing the search for a common presidential candidate at the centre of the political conversation.
The two leaders met in Nyeri on Monday as opposition figures intensify efforts to build a united political force ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua later disclosed that the discussions went beyond a routine political meeting, describing them as extensive consultations on what he termed the liberation of the country and the formation of a “sixth administration.”
In a statement issued after the meeting, Gachagua said he had held talks with Kalonzo and the leadership of the Wiper Patriotic Front on the political direction they believe Kenya should take.
More significantly, Gachagua said the leaders had agreed that personal ambitions may have to take a back seat if the opposition is to mount a serious challenge in 2027.
According to the former Deputy President, the participants agreed to make the sacrifices necessary to settle on a single presidential candidate who would lead their political formation into the next election.
The declaration adds fresh weight to ongoing attempts to bring together opposition leaders who have, in recent months, held separate consultations over a possible coalition.
Gachagua’s Wamunyoro home has increasingly become an important meeting point for opposition figures.
Earlier this month, he hosted Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement for discussions on Kenya’s political future.
Kalonzo’s visit comes against this backdrop of increasingly active opposition negotiations.
The Wiper leader has previously maintained that his engagements with Gachagua are part of efforts to strengthen cooperation rather than evidence of divisions within the opposition.
The talks, however, are taking place amid competing political ambitions.
While some leaders are already positioning themselves for the presidency, the emerging message from the Wamunyoro discussions is that opposition leaders may ultimately have to rally behind one candidate.
For now, no final candidate has been announced.
Gachagua indicated that consultations would continue, leaving open the question of who will eventually emerge as the opposition’s preferred presidential contender.
With the 2027 contest drawing closer, the Wamunyoro meeting could prove significant not because it produced an immediate political deal, but because it demonstrated a growing willingness among key opposition figures to negotiate around a shared electoral strategy.
