Details have emerged about what businesswoman Zeynab Muhammad had returned to collect at her shop before she became trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed building in Eastleigh, Nairobi.

Zeynab reportedly went back to pick up her mobile phone shortly before the 18-storey building collapsed, leaving her trapped for more than 30 hours. Her husband, Sultan Mohamed, described the painful experience he endured while waiting for rescuers to find his wife. He said the uncertainty about her condition left him deeply worried because he did not know whether she was alive.

Speaking to The Eastleigh Voice, Sultan revealed that he went without food throughout the 30 hours he waited for news about Zeynab. A Somali woman who stayed with him provided water and emotional support.

The businessman also disclosed that his blood pressure rose during the ordeal, forcing him to seek medical attention because of the stress.

Sultan explained that his wife had heard loud noises shortly before the building collapsed. She initially thought people were fighting nearby and attempted to leave the building.

She spent more than 30 hours surrounded by concrete and debris before rescuers finally reached her.

Although her rescue brought relief to the family, the collapse destroyed their business and source of income.

Sultan said they had recently moved their shop after being asked to leave their previous premises at a mall. They had purchased two refrigerators and other items to restart their business at the new location.

The businessman revealed that the collapse destroyed their equipment and stock, leaving him struggling to provide for their three children. He added that he had paid rent several months in advance and was yet to calculate the full value of his losses.

Despite losing their livelihood, the family remains grateful that Zeynab survived the frightening ordeal.
