Former MP Dies While Receiving Treatment at Nairobi Hospital

Former Alego Usonga Member of Parliament Otieno Mak’Onyango has died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi, bringing to an end a career that spanned journalism and political leadership in Kenya.

The death of the former legislator was announced by the current Alego Usonga MP, Sam Atandi, who expressed sadness over the loss of his predecessor. Atandi confirmed that Mak’Onyango passed away while undergoing medical treatment in Nairobi and offered condolences following his death.

However, the cause of death and details surrounding his illness had not been made public at the time of reporting.

Mak’Onyango remains remembered for his political breakthrough during the 1992 General Election, when he secured the Alego Usonga parliamentary seat in Siaya County. His victory came at the expense of Peter Oloo Aringo, a veteran politician who had represented the constituency since 1974.

By defeating Aringo, Mak’Onyango brought an end to his predecessor’s 18-year representation of the constituency, marking a significant change in the area’s political leadership. The result established Mak’Onyango as an important figure in Alego Usonga’s political history.

His time in Parliament, however, was relatively brief. Aringo returned to reclaim the seat in the 1997 General Election and continued serving as the constituency’s representative until 2002.

Before entering elective politics, Mak’Onyango built a career in journalism. He worked for the East African Standard, a newspaper now known as The Standard. His experience in the media exposed him to Kenya’s political developments during a particularly difficult period in the country’s history.

In August 1982, Mak’Onyango was among those arrested following an unsuccessful coup attempt by members of the Kenya Air Force seeking to overthrow the government of former President Daniel arap Moi.

The failed coup triggered widespread arrests and a government crackdown on people suspected of involvement in the attempted takeover. The incident remains one of the most significant events in Kenya’s political history.

Mak’Onyango later moved from journalism into electoral politics, joining a generation of Kenyans whose careers were influenced by the country’s changing political landscape.

His death represents a loss to both the media profession and public leadership. His 1992 election victory, which ended a long period of representation by Aringo, remains a defining moment in Alego Usonga’s political history.
