Fikile Mbalula offers to mediate between MySol and Julius Malema

Fikile Mbalula has publicly backed MySol and offered to mediate with Julius Malema over the mining dispute, drawing attention to the political disagreement and the possibility of intervention by the ANC secretary-general. In a post on X, Mbalula described MySol as a solid South African entrepreneur and said he would reach out to Malema to understand what the fight was about so the matter could be settled amicably. The offer came after Malema called MySol a “small boy” at an EFF rally and said the country’s mineral wealth should benefit ordinary people.

One thing the post leaves open is whether Malema has agreed to meet Mbalula or whether MySol has accepted the offer of mediation, since the post does not say whether either man has responded. The post also does not say when Mbalula made the offer or where the mediation would take place. Those details matter because they would establish whether the intervention is likely to happen. Without them, the account rests on Mbalula’s public statement, and the outcome of the dispute remains unknown.

People reacting to the post questioned why Mbalula was intervening in a dispute between a businessman and an opposition leader when there were wider problems in the country. Some said he should be speaking to the ANC leadership about the government’s sense of urgency instead, while others said Malema was acting out of jealousy and that there was nothing to settle. Some said the mineral wealth should benefit ordinary people rather than lining the pockets of one individual.

What remains unresolved is whether the mediation will go ahead or whether the dispute will continue in public. The post does not establish whether Malema or MySol have responded to the offer, and the political disagreement remains unresolved. The public is waiting for more information, because the offer of intervention has raised questions about the role of the ANC secretary-general in a dispute involving an opposition leader and a businessman.
