Tanzanian Activist Abducted By Armed Men While In Kenya
Prominent Tanzanian human rights defender and opposition official Twaha Mwaipaya has allegedly been abducted by armed men in Kamulu, Machakos County, raising acute cross-border concerns regarding the safety of political dissidents and civil society actors operating in the region.
According to statements released by Amnesty International Kenya and human rights monitors, Mwaipaya was seized at approximately 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 25, 2026, while traveling in a taxi to visit acquaintances. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the perpetrators operated across a convoy of three vehicles, which included a Toyota Land Cruiser Hardtop.
Fellow activist Maria Sarungi confirmed the disappearance, stating that regional civil society networks are actively collaborating to trace his whereabouts.
Prominent figures and human rights groups have appealed directly to Kenyan security authorities and border control agencies specifically requesting heightened inspection protocols at key border points like Namanga to prevent his illicit removal across the international boundary.
Mwaipaya serves as the national mobilization coordinator for the youth wing of Tanzania’s main opposition party, CHADEMA (Baraza la Vijana la CHADEMA – BAVICHA).
A vocal critic of the administration in Dar es Salaam, he has consistently campaigned for comprehensive constitutional overhaul to curtail executive overreach, while actively challenging state-sponsored repression, corruption, and police brutality.
The incident highlights growing anxieties over cross-border surveillance, transnational targeting, and the safety of political refugees and activists seeking sanctuary within East Africa.
Regional human rights coalitions have urged law enforcement agencies in Kenya to launch an immediate, transparent investigation to locate Mwaipaya and guarantee his physical safety.
