President Ruto Mourns 23 People Killed in Mtito Andei Accident, Issues New Directive

President William Ruto has mourned 23 people who died in a tragic road accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway in Makueni County, sending condolences to the victims’ families and wishing those injured a quick recovery.

The deadly crash occurred on Sunday morning at Kanga, near Mtito Andei, after a church bus carrying 45 passengers from Nairobi towards Mombasa reportedly attempted to overtake several vehicles.

The manoeuvre ended in a devastating head-on collision, leaving the bus severely damaged.

Seventeen people died at the scene, while six others later succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at Mtito Andei Sub-County Hospital.

President Ruto described the incident as a painful loss for both the affected families and the country.

He said the nation was sharing in the grief of those who lost their loved ones and called for strength and comfort for the bereaved families.

Ruto also wished a speedy recovery to survivors who sustained injuries in the crash.

Following the accident, Ruto urged motorists, particularly public service vehicle drivers, to exercise greater caution while using the roads.

He stressed the importance of obeying traffic rules and prioritising the safety of passengers and other road users.

The President further directed relevant authorities to conduct thorough inspections of public service vehicles and ensure they meet required safety standards.

The accident has once again raised concern about safety on the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, a major transport route serving travellers and cargo trucks.

As families begin to bury their loved ones, Kenyans are being reminded that every journey should be treated with care. Safer driving, proper vehicle maintenance, and strict enforcement of traffic laws remain essential to preventing similar tragedies.
