Nairobi: A Man Mistakenly Receives KSh 6.7 Million and Spends It All Before Being Arrested

A Nairobi man has been arrested for allegedly using up KSh 6.7 million that was mistakenly transferred to his bank account instead of returning the money to its rightful owner.

Dickson Yiaile Sitei was apprehended on Saturday, October 24, 2026, by detectives from the Banking Fraud Investigation Unit along Lantana Road in Westlands, Nairobi.According to investigators, the incident occurred on November 18, 2025, when a company was processing 74 electronic payments to different recipients.

One of the transactions involved KSh 72,000 that the company owed Sitei as rent for its shop in Suswa.

However, an error during the transaction process resulted in an additional KSh 6,744,354 meant for another company being deposited into Sitei’s bank account.

The unexpected transfer left Sitei with millions of shillings that he was not entitled to receive.

When the company attempted to recover the money, Sitei allegedly declined to return it and instead spent the funds.

The matter prompted detectives to launch investigations to establish how the money was transferred and what happened after it landed in the suspect’s account.Following the investigations, officers submitted the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for examination.

After reviewing the evidence, the prosecution authority recommended that Sitei face charges of deliberately retaining money mistakenly sent to him. He is also expected to answer to a money laundering charge.

The offences fall under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act of 2018 and the Proceeds of Crime and Money Laundering Act.

Sitei remained in police custody as officers completed the necessary procedures ahead of his expected court appearance.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations cautioned Kenyans against treating money mistakenly deposited into their accounts as personal funds.

The agency stressed that anyone who receives money in error is expected to return it to the rightful owner. Deliberately keeping or spending such funds could result in arrest and prosecution.
