MK Party pledges 400k jobs across municipalities under its governance

Umkhonto Wesizwe Party president Jacob Zuma says local government must play a decisive role in dismantling economic exclusion and expanding economic opportunities for historically disadvantaged communities as South Africa approaches the local government elections.

He says the party’s election manifesto sets an ambitious target of working towards creating 400 thousand verified full-time jobs across municipalities governed by the MK Party over five years.

Zuma added municipalities cannot remain passive administrators of public resources while unemployment, poverty and inequality continue to affect townships, rural communities and working-class households.

Meanwhile, the MK Party is undergoing internal leadership changes less than two weeks before the local government elections.

The party has dismissed Sibonelo Nomvalo as secretary-general and appointed Lindiwe Mtshali as acting secretary-general. The decision follows concerns over internal factionalism, dual remuneration, and the selection of councilors.

The leadership changes come as the organisation prepares to contest its first municipal elections since its formation in 2023.

Despite these changes, the party’s first deputy president, Duduzane Zuma, remains positive about its chances at the polls
