Mike Oquaye Jr Breaks Silence on Adwoa Safo’s Comeback Bid for Dome-Kwabenya Seat
According to GhanaWeb on Saturday, October 24, 2026, former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Dome-Kwabenya, Mike Oquaye Jr, has expressed confidence in his chances of reclaiming the constituency’s parliamentary seat in the 2028 general elections following Sarah Adwoa Safo’s decision to contest the party’s parliamentary primaries again.
Oquaye Jr made his position known during an appearance on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo programme on Friday, October 23, 2026, where he addressed the former Member of Parliament’s planned return to the political contest.
Adwoa Safo, who represented Dome-Kwabenya in Parliament for 12 years, recently announced her intention to contest the NPP parliamentary primaries ahead of the 2028 elections. Her decision has renewed discussions about the party’s choice of candidate for the constituency, particularly because she previously competed against Oquaye Jr during the party’s internal elections.
Reacting to her comeback bid, Oquaye Jr maintained that he remained confident about his political future and believed the NPP could win back the seat in the next general election.
He argued that the party’s defeat in Dome-Kwabenya during the 2024 elections was not necessarily the result of voters rejecting him personally. Instead, he attributed the outcome largely to voter apathy and dissatisfaction with issues beyond his individual candidacy.
According to him, a considerable number of registered voters did not participate in the 2024 general election, contributing to the NPP’s inability to retain the constituency.
Oquaye Jr explained that the number of registered voters in Dome-Kwabenya had increased between the 2020 and 2024 elections, but the party failed to translate that growth into an increase in votes.
He also pointed out that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) experienced a reduction in its vote count, which he believes suggests that voter apathy affected both major political parties.
Speaking on the programme, he expressed optimism that voters who stayed away from the polls in 2024 could return in 2028 and support him if he is selected as the NPP’s parliamentary candidate.
He insisted that the party’s previous defeat should not be interpreted as a personal rejection by constituents, adding that he believed the political circumstances could change before the next general election.
His comments come at a time when the NPP is preparing for another potentially competitive parliamentary primary in Dome-Kwabenya.
Adwoa Safo announced her decision to return to the contest in a statement issued on Thursday, October 22, 2026. She explained that her decision followed considerable reflection, consultations and engagements with party leadership and executives.
The former Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister said she had previously considered pursuing opportunities outside the constituency but later reconsidered, concluding that representing the people of Dome-Kwabenya remained an important responsibility.
She also highlighted her 12 years of parliamentary service and her commitment to addressing the constituency’s developmental challenges.
Adwoa Safo maintained that she still had more to contribute to the area and expressed her desire to work with residents, party members and other stakeholders towards its development.
Her announcement has placed her back in the conversation over who should represent the NPP in Dome-Kwabenya during the 2028 elections.
The political contest is particularly significant because the NPP lost the parliamentary seat to the NDC in the 2024 general election. The NDC’s Faustina Elikplim Akurugu was declared the winner after the Electoral Commission’s re-collation process, defeating Oquaye Jr by 298 votes.
Oquaye Jr’s confidence therefore reflects his determination to return to Parliament, although he must first secure the NPP’s nomination if he intends to contest the seat again.
The upcoming primary could also test the strength of Adwoa Safo’s support among party delegates after her previous electoral experience and decision to seek another opportunity to represent the constituency.
For now, both politicians remain central to discussions about the NPP’s future in Dome-Kwabenya. The party’s eventual choice of parliamentary candidate will be an important step in its efforts to reclaim the seat in 2028.
Oquaye Jr’s latest remarks make it clear that he remains confident about his chances, despite Adwoa Safo’s return bid. However, the outcome of the party’s internal contest will ultimately depend on the decision of its delegates when the primaries are held.
