Linda Mwananchi Suffers Setback as Key Turkana Leader Returns to ODM Ahead of 2027 Polls

The Linda Mwananchi Movement has suffered a setback in Turkana County after Paul Lokopir, popularly known as Matawas, abandoned the faction and returned to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Lokopir, a former ODM chairman in Turkana County, recently rejoined the orange party after briefly associating with Linda Mwananchi, a political movement linked to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

In a video circulating on Facebook, Lokopir was seen addressing supporters while dressed in ODM colours. He defended his decision to return to the party, dismissing criticism over his changing political affiliations and arguing that he had simply responded to calls from fellow leaders to come back.

“The other day I wore like three different flags, is that how it is, but if Ariko and Gladys Wanga are calling me back home, have I done any wrong?” Lokopir asked his supporters in Swahili.

His return represents a potential setback for Linda Mwananchi as the movement works to strengthen its grassroots support ahead of the 2027 General Election. Turkana is among the areas where Sifuna’s allies have been attempting to build a stronger political presence by attracting local leaders and mobilisers.

Lokopir remains a familiar figure in Turkana politics. He has previously claimed that he led ODM in the county for 21 years before losing his position. In earlier remarks, he accused ODM national chairperson Gladys Wanga of initiating his removal, connecting the dispute to wider disagreements within the party involving Sifuna and Siaya Governor James Orengo.

Meanwhile, ODM has intensified efforts to rebuild unity and discourage further defections. Party leader Oburu Oginga and Wanga have been engaging grassroots officials and women leaders as part of efforts to consolidate the party’s support.

On October 22, Wanga met ODM women leaders in a meeting focused on strengthening loyalty amid ongoing internal disagreements.

Linda Mwananchi has also experienced other defections. East Asembo MCA Gordon Onguuru recently returned to ODM, citing concerns about the movement’s registration status and political direction.

The latest development comes as Sifuna positions Linda Mwananchi as a potential alternative ahead of the 2027 elections. The movement currently operates under The Equitable Party, which is working towards adopting the Linda Mwananchi name officially.

A rally is scheduled for Kwale on October 31 as political realignments continue across the country.
