Kenya Met Reveals Why El Niño Rains Have Delayed as Kenyans Wait for Relief
Kenyans waiting for the October–December rains may have to remain patient as unusual weather conditions over the Indian Ocean continue to affect the expected rainfall patterns.
The Kenya Meteorological Service has linked the delay in some areas to tropical storm activity that has interfered with the movement of weather systems responsible for bringing rain to the country.
The delay has raised concerns among farmers who depend on seasonal rainfall to prepare their farms and plant crops.
According to the weather agency, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), a major weather system that influences rainfall in Kenya, normally moves southwards during the October–December season.
However, the development of low-pressure systems over the northern Indian Ocean has disrupted this movement, delaying the onset of rain in some regions.
While parts of western Kenya have already received rainfall, other areas, particularly sections of central and eastern Kenya, have continued to experience dry conditions.
The difference in rainfall patterns means that some farmers may have to adjust their planting plans as they wait for more reliable weather conditions.
Meteorologists are also monitoring Tropical Storm Agueda to establish how its movement could affect rainfall across the country. Its impact will depend on the direction it takes and the weather conditions that develop around it.
The delay has also been linked to rising temperatures in some areas. Clear skies allow more sunlight to reach the ground, contributing to warmer conditions.
However, the delayed onset does not automatically mean that the entire seasonal forecast has changed. Rainfall is expected to vary from one region to another, and not every county will receive the same amount.
Farmers are encouraged to follow official weather updates and seek advice from agricultural extension officers before making major planting decisions.
As Kenya Met continues monitoring the situation, many Kenyans will be watching closely for signs of the rains that could ease the dry conditions and support farming activities.
