‘I Thought People Would Forget Me’: Broda Shaggi Breaks Down Recalling Stray Bullet Ordeal
While fans wondered why popular Nigerian comedian and actor Broda Shaggi suddenly disappeared from social media, little did they know that the entertainer was fighting for his life after being hit by a stray bullet.
The comedian, whose real name is Samuel Perry, recently opened up about the frightening incident, revealing how the bullet hit his hip while he was returning from a content shoot. In an emotional account of his experience, he also spoke about his fear of dying and the thought that people might forget him before he could return to doing what he loves.
According to him, the incident happened on a day he had gone out for a brand activation. After completing the job, he and his team were heading home when they got caught in traffic.
“Everything was normal until all of a sudden, I heard a loud bang, and everywhere went silent,” he recalled.
As he was being rushed to the hospital, Shaggi said he touched his hip and noticed blood. That was when it dawned on him that he had been hit by a stray bullet.
“I didn’t know how we got to the hospital, but one thing I remember was praying until we got there,” he said.
The comedian was first taken to a hospital where he was stabilised before being moved to another facility for further treatment.
He said the second hospital responded quickly, taking him straight to the emergency room. The prompt attention helped calm his fears as he began to process what had happened.
Looking back at the experience, Shaggi said his immediate concern was survival. Seeing the wound left him feeling terrible, but he was determined to make it through the ordeal.
For an entertainer whose life revolves around making people laugh, the experience was particularly difficult because he suddenly found himself unable to perform.
“As a performer, when I am not doing the thing I love doing most, I feel very useless. While in the hospital, I could not act,” he said.
The comedian also revealed that, at some point, he wondered whether the incident was intentional. He even considered the possibility that it was God’s way of telling him to slow down after years of working without adequate rest.
According to him, since 2018, his schedule had been almost non-stop. Whether he was writing skits, shooting content, recording music in the studio or travelling for engagements, there was always something demanding his attention.
He said he could hardly imagine staying away from work for a month without releasing at least six skits.
That was when his emotions got the better of him.
In tears, Shaggi recalled thinking about what might happen to his career if he could not return quickly.
“Sometimes I think people will forget me by the time I am back,” he said.
Thankfully, his story took a positive turn after he was flown abroad for surgery.
Shaggi said he recovered faster than he expected, although he still relies on crutches for support. He can now stand and walk, and he is looking forward to returning to the screen and creating content for his fans.
