IGP Disu Proposes 200% Gratuity, Higher Pensions for Retired Police Officers
According to The Sun Nigeria News on 25 October 2026, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has proposed a 200 per cent gratuity and improved pension benefits for retired police officers as a presidential committee examines longstanding concerns surrounding the police pension system.
The proposal is aimed at improving retirement benefits for eligible officers, including those who retired under existing pension arrangements, amid persistent complaints about inadequate payments, delayed entitlements and difficulties accessing retirement benefits.
The development comes as retired police officers continue to express dissatisfaction with their pension arrangements, while serving personnel have called for a review of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), which has remained a contentious issue within the Nigeria Police Force.
The presidential committee established to address the pension concerns comprises representatives of the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, the Budget Office of the Federation and the National Pension Commission (PenCom).
Under Disu’s proposal, eligible retired officers could receive a gratuity equivalent to 200 per cent, alongside pension benefits calculated with reference to their final salaries. However, the proposed changes have yet to receive final approval, as the committee’s recommendations and the Federal Government’s decision will determine the eventual structure and implementation of the reforms.
The initiative seeks to address concerns affecting both retired personnel and serving officers approaching retirement. Pensioners have repeatedly raised questions about the adequacy of their monthly payments, delays in receiving entitlements and administrative challenges that undermine their financial security after years of service.
The committee is expected to examine outstanding pension liabilities, funding arrangements and the administration of retirement benefits to develop recommendations for a more sustainable system.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s intervention has also raised expectations among retired officers that the ongoing review could result in significant changes to the existing pension framework.
A major concern is whether any approved reforms will extend to officers who retired before a new arrangement takes effect. Disu’s proposal envisages reviewing benefits for eligible former personnel, although the qualifying conditions and scope of coverage remain subject to the final policy.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has reportedly cleared outstanding pension payments that previously left some retirees waiting for up to two years. Pension increases have also been introduced, with some beneficiaries reportedly receiving nearly double their previous payments.
The committee’s recommendations are expected to guide the Federal Government’s decisions on funding, eligibility and implementation, as retired officers await a lasting resolution to their pension concerns.
