GoldBod Fires Back Over Galamsey Video, Sets Record Straight on Illegal Mining Claims

According to a report by TV3 Ghana on Sunday, October 25, 2026, the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has rejected attempts to portray its policy of transitioning eligible miners from illegal mining into regulated and responsible mining as an endorsement of illegal mining.

GoldBod stated that a selectively edited video was being used to create a misleading impression about its position on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey in Ghana.

The Board explained that its policy is intended to provide a legal pathway for eligible miners to operate within the country’s regulatory framework. It stressed that the initiative should not be interpreted as support for illegal mining activities.

According to GoldBod, there is a fundamental difference between permitting illegal mining and creating a pathway for eligible miners to transition into lawful mining operations. The Board maintained that its approach focuses on bringing qualified miners under proper regulation rather than encouraging activities that violate the country’s mining laws.

Illegal mining remains a major concern in Ghana because of its impact on water bodies, forest reserves, agricultural lands and the environment. The government has continued to face pressure to strengthen measures to tackle galamsey and promote responsible mining practices.

GoldBod’s clarification highlights its position that regulating eligible miners is different from endorsing illegal mining. The Board maintains that its policy is intended to promote compliance with mining regulations and encourage responsible practices within the sector.

The Board also warned against the use of selectively edited videos to misrepresent its position, as such content could mislead the public and create confusion about its policies.
