FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Says He Would Vote for Peter Obi as Social Media President

Wike made the statement on Saturday during a stakeholders’ town hall meeting in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State. He questioned whether Obi’s popularity online demonstrated the ability to lead Nigeria, arguing that social media recognition was not enough to qualify someone for the presidency.

The minister acknowledged Obi’s influence on social media but maintained that he did not consider the NDC presidential candidate suitable to govern the country.

“Truly speaking, I give Obi president of social media. If you were voting for the president of social media, I would vote for him,” Wike said.

Wike also attacked Obi over his approach to personal spending, describing him as stingy. He argued that the country’s economy should not be entrusted to someone he considers unsuitable for the presidency.

The comments reflect Wike’s continued criticism of Obi as political activities build ahead of the 2027 general election. The former Anambra governor is seeking the presidency under the Nigeria Democratic Congress, while Wike has publicly backed President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress.

Wike has repeatedly expressed confidence in Tinubu’s chances of securing another term, while dismissing the prospects of opposition candidates.
