Revealed: The Reason Why MK Party Removes Sibonelo Nomvalo As Secretary-General Has Been Revealed

In response to concerns regarding the selection of councillor candidates, internal factionalism, and alleged administrative shortcomings inside the organization, the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has announced that Sibonelo Nomvalo has been dismissed of his duties as secretary-general.

When the news was made on Thursday, October 22, 2026, it signified yet another big leadership transition within the party that was led by Jacob Zuma, who had previously served as the president of South Africa. This change occurred less than two weeks before the elections for local government that were set to take place on November 4th.

The party claims that the decision was made in response to a number of concerns surrounding the organization’s internal administration, communication across leadership structures, and compliance with established organisational procedures.

Disagreements over the selection procedure for councillors, internal factionalism, concerns concerning dual remuneration, and delays in the distribution of campaign materials were some of the issues that were brought to light.

According to reports, the party also voiced its concerns on changes that were made inside its parliamentary caucus and parliamentary administration. These changes were apparently implemented without informing Zuma, national officials, or the overall presidency collective.

Furthermore, the MK Party highlighted the construction of high-level deployment committees without having awareness of the essential leadership structures as a reason for their actions.

The party said in its statement that these concerns had raised doubts regarding the coordination of the organization, accountability, internal communication, and adherence to the procedures that had been created.

The shift in leadership comes at a time when there are continuous concerns regarding the procedures that are used inside the party, notably with regard to the selection of candidates for the next municipal elections.

Dissatisfied party members have allegedly questioned the reason why certain persons who were nominated at the community level were apparently absent from the final lists that were submitted to the Electoral Commission of South Africa. These comments have been noted in reports that have previously highlighted complaints from some party members over councillor candidate lists.

As a result of these events, the party’s candidate selection methods and the relationship between its provincial structures and national leadership have received a renewed amount of attention.

Acting Secretary-General Lindiwe Mtshali has been Awarded the Position

The MK Party made the announcement that Lindiwe Mtshali, who was previously serving as the Deputy Secretary-General, will take over the role of interim Secretary-General after Nomvalo was removed from his position.

It is anticipated that Mtshali will collaborate with Mxolisi Phakathi, who occupies the position of National Chairperson, in order to guarantee continuity in the administration, organisational coordination, and internal operations of the party.

While this is going on, Sifiso Mahlangu, who is now serving as the national spokesman, will continue to hold his job as spokesperson while also taking on extra responsibilities linked with the office of the deputy secretary-general.

In addition to enhancing coordination and accountability, the purpose of the temporary arrangement is to ensure that the party’s organisational structures continue to operate without any disruptions.

Additionally, the party has requested that its national, provincial, regional, and branch structures work together with the newly appointed officials and show respect for the changes in leadership.

Since the party was founded in December 2023, there have been a number of changes that have occurred in the office of secretary-general. Nomvalo’s departure is the latest in this procession.

In March of 2026, he was appointed after Bongani Mncwango was removed from his position, which brought to light the numerous changes that had taken place within one of the most important administrative offices of the organization.

However, notwithstanding the most recent incident, the immediate focus will be on how the leadership shift will effect the party’s preparations for the next elections for local government.

In order to encourage its members to prioritise the organization’s interests over their own personal concerns, the MK Party has placed a strong focus on the importance of unity, discipline, and accountability.

For the time being, Mtshali is tasked with the responsibility of supervising the administrative operations of the party during a crucial period. This is because the organization is preparing for the elections while simultaneously addressing concerns over internal coordination and candidate selection.
