Kaizer Motaung Jr Backs Da Cruz After Chiefs’ CAF Exit

Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr has reaffirmed the club’s support for head coach Fernando da Cruz and the technical team following the club’s disappointing elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup.

In a statement released on Saturday, Motaung Jr acknowledged the frustration felt by supporters, players and other stakeholders after Chiefs failed to progress in the continental competition. However, he insisted that the setback would not change the club’s commitment to its long-term football strategy.

The Soweto giants were eliminated by Zambia’s Red Arrows, who secured their place in the next stage after the tie ended in a 1-1 draw in the second leg, giving the Zambian side a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Despite the disappointment, Motaung Jr maintained that the coaching staff continued to enjoy the club’s confidence as they worked to establish a clear playing philosophy and development structure.

“As a Club, we would like to reaffirm our full support for, and confidence in, the Head Coach and the entire technical team,” he said.

He also praised the coaches for their professionalism, dedication and continued efforts to improve the team, adding that the players had shown determination despite the result and the injuries affecting the squad.

“The team is fighting hard every game to uphold a high standard of performance, and yesterday, despite the result and the injuries we carry, that warrior spirit was visible on the field,” Motaung Jr stated.

The sporting director acknowledged that the club still had areas requiring improvement but stressed that one disappointing result would not undermine the broader project. He said the club would assess its performances, identify shortcomings and make necessary adjustments.

Motaung Jr also thanked the supporters for their continued commitment, recognising their disappointment while calling for unity as the team works to meet expectations.

He concluded that stability, accountability and consistent planning would remain central to the club’s ambitions, with the technical team expected to continue working towards sustainable success.
