Obi: He Started the Fight; He Came to The Site Where I Was Working And Started Blasting Me– Umahi
The dispute between Works Minister David Umahi and Peter Obi over the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway has taken another turn, with Umahi accusing the former Anambra governor of initiating their public disagreement.
During an interview with Arise Television on October 23, 2026, Umahi said he had not started criticising Obi. Instead, he claimed that Obi visited the construction site and publicly attacked his approach to the project.
The disagreement reflects the wider political scrutiny surrounding major federal infrastructure projects. Roads of this scale can generate debate over construction costs, implementation, public benefits and the government’s priorities.
Such projects also carry political significance because supporters and opponents often use them to assess an administration’s performance.
However, the exchange between Umahi and Obi does not, by itself, settle the substantive questions surrounding the highway. Those questions are better examined through project documents, transparent cost information, construction progress and evidence of public value.
The minister’s account represents his version of how the confrontation began. A fuller understanding would require considering the comments and evidence from all sides.
For Nigerians, the most useful outcome would be a debate focused on the project’s delivery, accountability and benefits rather than allowing personal disagreements to overshadow issues affecting public infrastructure.
