NDC Tells NPP to Skip 2028 Elections

Roger T. D. Wills, an aspirant for the position of Deputy National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has suggested that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) consider sitting out the 2028 general elections to concentrate on rebuilding its structures ahead of a possible return to power in 2032.

According to a statement attributed to him in a social media post shared by Kasapa FM, the NDC communicator believes the NPP could benefit from prioritising internal reforms rather than immediately pursuing another electoral victory.

The proposal comes as the NPP continues to grapple with the political consequences of its defeat in the 2024 general elections, which saw the party lose the presidency and suffer significant setbacks in Parliament.

Wills’ position suggests that the party could use the period leading up to 2032 to reassess its leadership, strengthen its grassroots organisation and develop a more effective political strategy for future elections.

However, the suggestion differs from the publicly stated position of some NPP leaders, who remain focused on regaining power in 2028.

Newly elected NPP National Chairman John Boadu has emphasised that the party’s immediate objective is to win the next general election. He has also spoken about taking strategic decisions to improve the party’s electoral performance and strengthen its organisational structures.

Wills’ proposal therefore introduces a contrasting perspective into the debate over how the NPP should respond to its recent electoral defeat: whether to pursue an immediate return to government or dedicate more time to organisational renewal before contesting power again.

The NPP has yet to be shown to have adopted the proposal, and it remains unclear whether Wills has offered further details on how such a strategy would work.

For now, the suggestion adds to the wider discussion about the party’s future direction and the measures it must consider as it prepares for the 2028 elections.
