Mt Kenya Politician Michael Makarina Says Kikuyus Can Fully Back Ruto in 2027 if ODM Leaves His Camp
Political commentator Michael Makarina has sparked debate after suggesting that President William Ruto could regain strong support among Kikuyu voters if the Orange Democratic Movement withdrew from his political camp.
Makarina argued that political disagreements between Ruto and some members of the Kikuyu community are connected to his cooperation with ODM and leaders from the Luo community. He suggested that the situation could change if the current political arrangement fell apart.
“If Luos and ODM were to leave Ruto, Kikuyus will vote for him mia kwa mia,” Makarina said, expressing his view that the community could overwhelmingly support the President under different political circumstances.
His remarks come amid continuing debate over Ruto’s relationship with the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election. The region played a significant role in his 2022 victory, when he ran alongside Rigathi Gachagua, who later fell out with the President and became an opposition figure.
Makarina’s argument also touches on the political fallout between Ruto and Gachagua. Their disagreement has become part of wider discussions about regional representation, political alliances and the direction of Mt Kenya politics.
However, Makarina’s claim remains a political prediction rather than evidence of how Kikuyu voters would behave in 2027. Voters within the community hold different views, and their decisions may depend on economic conditions, candidates, party alliances and other campaign issues.
ODM’s future relationship with Ruto could influence political negotiations, but it would not automatically determine the choices made by an entire community. Likewise, support for a political leader cannot be established solely through statements by commentators.
As parties and political leaders prepare for the next election, Makarina’s remarks add to the debate over whether changing alliances could reshape political support in Mt Kenya. The actual direction of voter preferences will become clearer through public political developments and credible polling as the election approaches.
