Just In: COTU Boss Francis Atwoli Lands Another Government Job
Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has secured another government role after being reappointed to the National Labour Board for a fresh three-year term.
The appointment, which took effect on September 4, 2026, places the veteran trade unionist among officials expected to contribute to discussions on labour matters in Kenya. The reappointment was listed in the Kenya Gazette for the week ending September 4.
Atwoli was reappointed alongside several other members, including Jacqueline Mugo, Dr Charles Kireru, Dickens Ouma, Moss Ndiema and Atie Swaleh Ramadhan. The board plays an important role in labour relations and matters affecting employers and workers.
His latest appointment comes as workers continue to face concerns about the cost of living, wages and employment conditions across the country. Trade unions have repeatedly called for better pay and improved protection for employees.
Atwoli has been one of Kenya’s most prominent labour leaders for decades. He has led COTU since 2001 and was re-elected unopposed as its secretary-general in March 2026, securing another five-year term.
The veteran unionist has also held leadership positions in other labour organisations, including the Kenya Plantation and Agricultural Workers Union, where he was re-elected general secretary in January this year.
His continued presence in labour institutions means he remains an influential figure in discussions involving workers, employers and the government.
However, his new term on the National Labour Board comes with expectations that the interests of ordinary Kenyan workers will remain central to labour discussions. Issues such as fair wages, workplace safety and timely payment of salaries continue to matter to employees in both the public and private sectors.
The reappointment also comes at a time when labour policies and the relationship between the government and trade unions remain important national issues.
As Atwoli takes on another three-year term on the board, Kenyans will be watching how the institution handles workers’ concerns.
Do you think Atwoli’s continued role in government labour institutions will help improve the welfare of Kenyan workers?
