Jonathan Was In Charge Of Navy,Army, DSS, They Threatened Him With Janjaweed,He Fell For It-Kunle Olawunmi
Retired Commodore Kunle Olawunmi, former Commandant of the Defence Intelligence College and former Deputy Director of Defence Administration at Defence Headquarters, has claimed that former President Goodluck Jonathan was threatened with the Janjaweed despite being in charge of Nigeria’s military and intelligence agencies.
Olawunmi made this statement during an interview on State Affairs with Edmund Obilo on Saturday, October 24, 2026, while discussing allegations that armed men were brought into Nigeria to destabilise Jonathan’s government and influence the country’s political affairs.
The retired military officer argued that Jonathan, as president and commander-in-chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, had authority over the military and key intelligence institutions but was nevertheless intimidated by the alleged threat involving the Janjaweed.
“Jonathan was in charge of the Navy, army, Air Force, DSS, NIA, DIA and they threatened him with Janjaweed, he fell for it,” Olawunmi said.
The agencies and institutions mentioned by Olawunmi include the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Department of State Services (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA).
His remarks followed his earlier allegation that some politicians had publicly claimed to have brought members of the Janjaweed from Sudan, as well as individuals from Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, to help them win elections.
Olawunmi had also suggested that the alleged movement of armed men was intended to pressure Jonathan by threatening to unleash them to destabilise his administration. He linked this to the former president’s reported position that the blood of Nigerians was not worth his political ambition.
