Heavy Rains, Strong Winds Expected in 6 Counties as Met Department Issues Fresh Advisory
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a fresh weather advisory warning of moderate to heavy rainfall and strong winds in six counties, urging residents to remain vigilant against possible flash floods and other weather-related hazards.
In an advisory issued on Saturday, October 24, the department said rainfall exceeding 20mm within 24 hours is expected in Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu and Garissa counties.
The rainfall advisory will remain in effect until Friday, October 30, with residents warned of possible flash floods and poor visibility during the period.
The department cautioned that flooding could occur even in areas that have not experienced heavy rainfall, particularly in locations downstream from affected areas.
Residents of the affected areas are advised to avoid sheltering under trees or staying near grilled windows during thunderstorms to reduce their exposure to lightning strikes. Those engaging in maritime activities are also urged to exercise caution.
Separately, the meteorological department warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots, equivalent to 12.5 metres per second, across the coastal, eastern and northern regions of the country.
The strong winds are expected between Saturday, October 24, and Wednesday, October 28, accompanied by moderate to heavy rainfall in several areas.
Residents in the affected regions are advised to secure loose objects, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities and exercise caution while travelling.
The department also urged Kenyans to keep away from trees, unstable structures and power lines during periods of strong winds.
People living in areas experiencing high temperatures are advised to remain hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
