From Champions League Glory to Football Administration: Tracing McDonald Mariga’s Historic Journey
Kenyan footballer McDonald Mariga made history in European football when he became the first Kenyan to win the UEFA Champions League, lifting the trophy with Inter Milan in 2010.
Mariga’s career took him from Kenya to Europe, where he played for clubs including Helsingborgs in Sweden and Parma in Italy. In January 2010, he joined Inter Milan under manager José Mourinho, becoming part of the squad that won the treble that season.
On May 22, 2010, Inter defeated Bayern Munich 2-0 in the Champions League final at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid. The victory cemented Mariga’s place in Kenyan football history.
He also enjoyed memorable moments with the Harambee Stars. During an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola at Nyayo National Stadium on March 26, 2011, Mariga scored a late long-range goal to give Kenya a 2-1 victory. He was subsequently sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
Mariga later played for clubs including Real Sociedad in Spain and Latina in Italy before moving into public life. In 2019, he contested the Kibra parliamentary seat but lost the election.
He subsequently transitioned into football administration, joining the Football Kenya Federation leadership under president Hussein Mohamed.
Mariga’s journey from professional football to administration marks another chapter in his contribution to Kenyan sport.
