Eastleigh Building Collapse Takes New Twist as Murkomen Reveals Details of Missing People

Seven people have been reported missing following the collapse of a multi-storey building under construction in Eastleigh, Nairobi, as rescue teams continue searching for those who may be trapped in the rubble.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed that 67 construction workers were at the site when the building collapsed on Friday afternoon.

According to Murkomen, 66 workers escaped without injuries, while one was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital in stable condition.

Murkomen said 11 shops located on the ground floor and in the basement were occupied at the time of the incident.

Seven people have since been reported missing, with rescue teams having made contact with some of them as efforts to reach those trapped continue.

The Interior CS visited the scene on Friday evening alongside Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku to assess the situation and support the ongoing rescue operation.

A multi-agency team comprising the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, Nairobi City County Government, National Youth Service, Kenya Red Cross and other government agencies is leading the search and rescue efforts.

Murkomen urged families whose loved ones are missing to report to the Kenya Red Cross through its emergency response number, 1199, to help coordinate the rescue operation.

He assured the public that the government was providing the rescue teams with the necessary support to speed up the search and rescue mission.

He added that arrangements were also being made to provide affected individuals and families with assistance, including psychosocial support.

The CS further stated that the cause of the building collapse would be thoroughly investigated by relevant national and county government agencies in collaboration with professional bodies.

“Those found responsible will be held accountable,” Murkomen said, promising action against anyone found culpable.
