Eastleigh Building Collapse: Babu Owino Visits Scene as He Raises Questions to Nairobi County Govt
Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has renewed calls for accountability following the Eastleigh building collapse, demanding answers from Nairobi County authorities over the approval and inspection of buildings in the capital.
The legislator made the remarks after visiting the scene of the collapsed multi-storey structure, where he said he had joined others in assessing the situation and expressing sympathy to families affected by the tragedy.
In a statement shared on Facebook alongside photographs taken at the scene, Owino questioned whether the building had met the required construction standards and whether the relevant authorities had fulfilled their responsibility to protect residents from unsafe structures.
βWe cannot afford to normalise the loss of lives arising from possible failures in construction oversight. We demand answers on how the building was approved, whether the required construction standards were met, and who should be held accountable for any failures,β Owino stated.
His intervention places renewed attention on the role of the Nairobi County Government in overseeing construction projects, conducting inspections and ensuring that developers comply with the regulations governing building safety.
The Eastleigh incident has raised concerns about the potential consequences of weaknesses in construction supervision, particularly in densely populated neighbourhoods where residential buildings, commercial premises and small businesses operate close together.
Owino argued that residents should not have to worry about the safety of buildings in which they live, work or conduct business.
He called for clear explanations from the relevant authorities regarding the procedures followed before the collapsed structure was approved for construction.
βNairobi residents deserve safe buildings, responsible leadership, and a county government that puts their lives first,β he added.
The MP’s statement comes amid continuing public scrutiny of building safety standards and the enforcement of construction regulations in Nairobi following the incident along 9th Street in Eastleigh.
