Dampare Has Put Jail on My Record, and I Have to Explain It When Applying for Visas — Shatta Wale

Ghanaian dancehall musician Shatta Wale has expressed anger towards former Inspector-General of Police George Akuffo Dampare, blaming him for his imprisonment and the difficulties he says he continues to encounter when preparing to travel outside Ghana.

The musician explained that his time in Ankaful Prison remains a concern whenever he applies for a visa to visit another country, claiming that he has to explain the circumstances surrounding his imprisonment during the travel application process.

Shatta Wale, known for his outspoken personality and hit songs, said the experience has left a lasting mark on his life, particularly because his time in custody has become something he must address when questions arise about his criminal history.

Reflecting on the matter, the artiste expressed frustration over what he considers an unnecessary burden, arguing that his imprisonment has created difficulties that continue to follow him long after the incident.

“God punish IGP Dampare for putting jail in my life, to the extent that whenever I intend to travel, I always have to explain why I landed in jail,” Shatta Wale said.

His remarks reflect his continued displeasure over the circumstances surrounding his arrest and detention, with the musician directing his criticism at Dampare, who was serving as the country’s police chief when the incident occurred.

Shatta Wale’s arrest and subsequent remand in custody stemmed from an incident involving the publication of false information about an alleged shooting involving the musician, which generated police investigations and court proceedings.

The case occurred in 2021, when the artiste and three other individuals were arrested and brought before an Accra Circuit Court over allegations of publishing false news and causing fear and panic.

Shatta Wale pleaded not guilty to the charge, while the other individuals involved in the case also denied the allegations brought against them.

The incident was connected to a prophecy by Bishop Stephen Kwesi Appiah, popularly known as Jesus Ahoufe, who had predicted that the musician would be shot dead, leading to public concern and developments that eventually resulted in arrests.

The former police chief has become the subject of Shatta Wale’s renewed criticism as the musician continues to speak about the personal consequences of the case.

His latest comments centre on the lasting impact of his time in custody, particularly the explanations he says he must provide when seeking permission to travel abroad, an issue he believes continues to affect his life beyond the original legal proceedings.
