Sarpong Highlights Healthcare Priorities Following Engagement With Medical Laboratory Scientist
Ghanaian social commentator P.K. Sarpong has drawn attention to several proposals aimed at improving healthcare delivery following an engagement with leaders of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, October 24, 2026, Mr Sarpong outlined key issues discussed during the meeting, highlighting measures that could strengthen medical laboratory services and address some of the challenges affecting the countryās healthcare system.
Among the major issues raised was the establishment of a dedicated regulatory council for medical laboratory scientists. Such a body could provide specialised oversight of the profession, strengthen professional standards and support effective regulation of laboratory services across Ghana.
The discussions also focused on securing financial clearance to recruit additional personnel. Staffing remains an important consideration in healthcare delivery, as adequate numbers of trained professionals are necessary to support laboratory operations, reduce pressure on existing workers and improve service delivery.
Another priority was the promotion of local production of laboratory reagents and other essential supplies. Developing domestic production capacity could help reduce reliance on imported materials, improve supply availability and support the sustainability of laboratory services.
Participants also highlighted the importance of strengthening disease surveillance systems. Medical laboratories play a crucial role in identifying infections, confirming diagnoses and providing information that helps health authorities monitor disease patterns and respond to potential outbreaks.
Improving laboratory capacity could therefore contribute to earlier detection of public health threats and more effective responses to emerging health challenges.
The engagement further explored opportunities for strategic partnerships with private sector organisations. Collaboration between government institutions, healthcare professionals and private businesses could help mobilise resources, encourage innovation and support the implementation of healthcare reforms.
Mr Sarpong expressed appreciation to the associationās leadership and members for their participation in the discussions. He acknowledged the importance of involving professionals with practical experience in shaping policies that affect their work and the wider healthcare system.
The proposals come amid continuing discussions about how Ghana can strengthen its healthcare infrastructure, improve access to essential services and build capacity to respond to public health challenges.
If implemented, the measures discussed could support the development of medical laboratory services and improve the countryās ability to deliver reliable diagnostic testing.
However, the post did not indicate whether the proposals had received formal government approval or provide a timeline for implementation. Further engagement with the relevant authorities would be necessary to determine how the recommendations could translate into concrete policy measures.
The discussions nevertheless highlight the importance of investing in skilled personnel, effective professional regulation, locally available laboratory supplies and stronger disease surveillance to support Ghanaās healthcare system.
