CS Murkomen Reveals Fate of 67 Workers as Search for Missing People Continues in Eastleigh

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has confirmed that all 67 workers at a building that collapsed in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area have been accounted for. However, rescue teams are still searching for seven people reported missing after the incident.

Speaking at the scene on Friday, October 23, 2026, Murkomen said 66 workers escaped without injuries. One other worker sustained injuries and was receiving treatment in hospital.

“I am also informed that there were 67 workers on site, and all the 67 workers have been accounted for,” Murkomen said. He added that the injured worker was recovering well.

Despite accounting for the construction workers, authorities were still trying to establish the whereabouts of seven other people. Murkomen said rescue teams from the national government, Nairobi County and the Kenya Red Cross had made contact with some survivors believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.

“The good news is that from the rescue team, which include national government, county government, and Red Cross, it is reported that they have made contact with some of the survivors who are still trapped inside,” he said.

The Cabinet Secretary said rescuers were making every effort to reach those trapped alive. He also revealed that about 11 shops on the building’s basement and ground floors were occupied when the structure collapsed.

Authorities were investigating whether the seven missing people had been inside the building at the time of the incident. Murkomen urged anyone searching for missing relatives or acquaintances to contact emergency responders through 1199 to help with identification and rescue efforts.

The cause of the collapse had not been established by the time of his briefing. Rescue operations continued, with teams focused on reaching possible survivors and accounting for everyone who might have been inside the building.
