Ato Forson, Asiedu Nketia Can’t Match Bawumia’s Record — Kofi Bentil Declares Ahead of 2028 Race

IMANI Africa Vice President Kofi Bentil has questioned whether leading figures within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, have the political records he believes are necessary to challenge former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2028 presidential election.

Bentil suggested that Ghana’s political landscape could be entering a different phase, arguing that the NDC’s potential candidates should not assume that defeating Bawumia would be straightforward.

“There is a break in our political rhythm. Whether Ato Forson or Asiedu Nketia, I don’t think they have the record to beat Dr Mahamudu Bawumia,” Bentil stated.

His comments have added to discussions about the possible candidates who could represent the two major political parties in the next general election.

Bawumia, who led the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 presidential election, remains a prominent figure within the opposition party as it looks towards 2028.

Bentil’s assessment focuses on the political records and public standing of potential contenders. He argued that neither Ato Forson nor Asiedu Nketia has demonstrated a record that, in his view, would surpass Bawumia’s.

Ato Forson currently serves as Finance Minister and plays a central role in the government’s economic management. Asiedu Nketia, meanwhile, is an influential figure within the NDC and holds the position of national chairman, with responsibilities involving party organisation and coordination.

The differing roles of these figures are likely to feature in discussions about the NDC’s eventual choice of presidential candidate. However, their positions within the party and government do not, on their own, establish how voters would assess them in a national election.

Bentil’s remarks represent his personal assessment of the potential contest rather than a verified prediction of its outcome. The report does not provide comparative polling figures or other evidence that would independently establish the relative electoral strength of the individuals mentioned.

As the 2028 election approaches, candidate selection, party unity, economic conditions, governance records and campaign strategies are likely to remain important subjects of political debate.

For both the NPP and the NDC, the eventual contest will depend on the candidates selected and how voters evaluate their policies, experience and proposed plans for the country.
