Aftermath 2024 Defeat: We never expected to lose by that margin – Sammi Awuku
Akuapem North MP Hon Sammi Awuku has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership never anticipated the scale of the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, but signals he has picked from the party’s grassroots suggests it is rebuilding towards a comeback.
The NPP stalwart made the remarks in an interview on Point TV, where he reflected on the NPP’s electoral setback and the mood among its supporters.
“We genuinely did not anticipate losing the election by that margin,” Awuku said, admitting the outcome took the party’s leadership by surprise.
However, he believes the NPP is beginning to recover, citing observations from the party’s grassroots as reason to be optimistic ahead of the 2028 elections.
Awuku said some supporters who stayed away from the polls in 2024 were not necessarily abandoning the NPP for another party but were expressing their dissatisfaction with how it had managed affairs while in government.
“They were not expressing their pleasure with the party. They were expressing their displeasure,” he said.
According to the MP, some supporters’ decision not to vote sent a message to the party leadership about its governance record and choice of candidates.
He believes the NPP must understand those concerns and make the necessary changes to regain the trust of its traditional supporters.
“We have to look at ourselves and ask the difficult questions. Where did we go wrong? What did we do that made our own people decide not to come out and vote?” he said.
Despite the scale of the defeat, Awuku maintained that the party could rebuild by confronting its mistakes, strengthening its structures and reconnecting with voters.
“The NPP is a party that has been in opposition before. We have gone through difficult periods, and we have always found a way to come back,” he said.
He added that the party’s recovery would depend on how seriously its leaders took the lessons from 2024 and whether they could translate the concerns of grassroots supporters into meaningful reforms.
