What Edwin Sifuna Said After Eastleigh Building Collapse

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has broken his silence following the collapse of a multi-storey building in Eastleigh, Nairobi, expressing concern for workers feared trapped beneath the rubble.

In a message shared on his official X account, the senator offered prayers for those affected by the incident and expressed hope that rescue teams would find a positive outcome amid the unfolding emergency.

“We are praying for all those workers trapped in the collapsed building in Eastleigh. The Red Cross is saying they are in communication with them. We hope there will be a silver lining to this otherwise sad story,” Sifuna stated.

His remarks came after the building, which was still under construction, collapsed in one of Nairobi’s busy commercial districts, triggering an emergency response and raising fears about the safety of people who may have been inside at the time.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 1:00 pm along 9th Street near Yusuf Haji Avenue. Images and accounts from the scene described a large pile of concrete and building materials where the multi-storey structure had stood.

Eastleigh is a densely populated business hub, with numerous traders, workers and residents moving through its streets daily. The collapse therefore prompted concern that people could have been caught beneath the debris.

Emergency response teams, including Nairobi City County personnel, reportedly arrived to assist with search and rescue efforts. The Kenya Red Cross was also reported to be communicating with people believed to be trapped, raising hopes that rescuers could establish contact with those beneath the rubble.

However, the operation faced challenges as crowds gathered around the scene. Reports indicated that police deployed tear gas to disperse people and secure the area after disorder and alleged looting affected the response.

Sifuna’s message added a political leader’s voice to the growing concern surrounding the tragedy, focusing attention on the workers whose safety remained the immediate priority.

The number of people trapped, the extent of injuries and the full circumstances that led to the collapse remained matters requiring confirmation from authorities. The incident also renewed attention to construction safety and the importance of protecting workers and members of the public.
