Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has accused President Bola Tinubu of making every Nigerian poor by 300 per cent through the devaluation of the naira, saying the policy has turned Nigeria into “the poverty capital of the world.”
Obasanjo spoke on Wednesday at the Financial Times Africa Summit 2026 in London, United Kingdom.
He said the naira lost its value overnight due to economic reforms undertaken by the Tinubu administration in 2023.
The statesman argued, “We do not live in isolation as a country. We interact with the rest of the world. And overnight, you devalue the currency by 300 per cent. The naira went from N500 to a dollar to N1,500 to a dollar. What that meant was that every Nigerian is made poor by 300 per cent.”
Niger State Government has identified the integration of mental healthcare into primary health centres as a priority, amid concerns that existing health facility records do not fully capture the scale of psychological distress across the state.
The state government also identified insecurity, displacement, family difficulties and substance-related problems as factors contributing to mental health challenges in communities.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Murtala Muhammad Bagana, disclosed this through the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Abdullahi Imam, during a briefing to mark the 2026 World Mental Health Day.

The Rivers State Ministry of Education has launched an investigation into reports that 16 female students of Government Comprehensive High School, Taabaa, in Khana Local Government Area, were selected for alleged forced virginity testing.
The ministry condemned the reported incident in a statement dated October 22, 2026, saying the alleged exercise involved members of a traditional institution in the community.
According to the statement published on its Facebook page on Thursday, the ministry said persons claiming to represent the institution visited the school under the guise of offering scholarships and exercise books before allegedly selecting the students for the testing.
The ministry said the selection, which reportedly took place on Thursday, September 17, 2026, prompted objections and a peaceful protest by students.
