SANTACO Assures Commuters of No Immediate Taxi Fare Hikes After Fuel Levy Relief

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has welcomed the temporary fuel levy relief announced by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana and assured commuters that there will be no immediate taxi fare increases.

The council said the temporary reduction in the fuel levy is a positive step that will ease some of the financial pressure currently facing the taxi industry.

Godongwana announced that the General Fuel Levy will be cut by R1.50 per litre for petrol and R3 per litre for diesel from 4 November until 1 December, with smaller reductions continuing until 5 January 2027.

SANTACO said the industry continues to engage government on more sustainable, long-term relief measures, but confirmed that the current temporary relief means fares will not rise in the immediate term as a result of fuel costs.

The taxi industry has faced significant pressure from successive fuel price increases throughout the year, which have raised operating costs for operators and drivers. The temporary levy cuts are expected to provide some short-term breathing space for the sector.

Commuters, many of whom rely on taxis as their primary mode of transport, will benefit from the decision to hold fares steady for now while the industry and government continue discussions on longer-term solutions.
